Tug Of War by 0rcinusorca Tug Of War by 0rcinusorca
Kasatka grabbing my fingers with Kotar in back. She's grabbing my fingers with her lips and gently pulling, inviting me into the water to play. It pained me to have to refuse the invitation. Not that I didn't want to, I would have been banned from the park.

Nice to know I'm friends with the leader of the San Diego Pod.

What an amazing experience! I've only had some interaction via the underwater view tank (here in Orlando), but have never had the chance to actually touch any of them. Although I'm positive that will never happen, as my whale I've felt the most connection with (since I started going about 5 years ago) is Tilikum. I believe I was one of the few people actually moved to tears when they let him perform again. He's my big boy!

Although, I don't remember Sea World Orlando ever having a separate tank. And if they did, and it was there the time my parents took me when I was 3 or 4 (one of my earliest memories), then I have to have a serious talk with my parents!

This was not a separate tank. The Orcas were placed into the public access Dolphin petting pool.

Oh really? Maybe that's why we didn't have it here. Those tanks are WAY to shallow here for that!

But still, really awesome!!

You can touch the orcas at San Diego SeaWorld!? What is Orlando thinking!? Why are they depriving us here in FL? Though from reading below comments, I am guessing this is an old picture?

yes, 1980. Look how young Kasatka is. While I deeply miss this, in a way I'm glad it's not still going on. The majority of visitors don't know how to act around them, poking and prodding them. Hopefully she'd still recognize me if I ever get back to SWC. It would be nice to be able to accept her invitation to get int he water but I don't see that happening.

I wonder if OSHA knows this happened and how SW would explain it to them. lol

Very true. Yeah, i think OSHA would have a fit lol I'm still looking forward to trainers getting back in the water with them.

This was actually a long time ago. Before Sea World would have the orca calves in a seperate pool and much like the Dolphin touch pools, you were able to reach over and pet them.

Yes, this was a long time ago but it was not a separate tank for the Orcas. They were in the public access Dolphin petting pool with other Dolphins.

I see, thank you for clearing that up, I wasn't sure if it was the tank at Rocky Point or not =)

You know, maybe you could mention it to a trainer, and show them the pictures. They may not be able to allow you to touch her, but they might be able to let you have a short private interaction. I've heard of stuff like that happening before.

I wonder if they still would do that after what happened to Dawn, though the pics do show I'm experienced in interaction with them. When I sent email to the Voice of the Orcas group, the former trainers, they were all amazed at the photo. They had no idea this had ever happened as they all started years after this. Getting a good reaction from her at the UV would help greatly towards that too. :)i

Well I've seen pictures of a few famous people getting pictures with the whales, and I know in Orlando one fan on the facebook page was recognized with a one-on-one (well, one-on-one + trainer) interaction with Katina. I also know that the other park's rules are not as strict as those in Orlando, so they may be able to bend the rules a bit if you can figure out a way to contact SeaWorld or a trainer (or trainers).

You may even be able to just go, go to the UV and see if there are any trainers there (if there are, talk to them and show them the pictures) and if not there, there's usually 1 or 2 trainers who stay after the shows to talk to guests, you could try to snag one of them as well.
